Abstract

The development of digital technology and the dominance of social media have triggered significant changes in the use of the Indonesian language among Generation Z, who have grown up as digital natives with fast, concise, and dynamic communication patterns. This linguistic phenomenon is reflected in shifts in language structure, the emergence of abbreviations, informal expressions, and a tendency toward code-mixing with foreign terms in online interactions, which differ from the use of traditional standard language. Empirical studies indicate that these patterns of change affect not only linguistic aspects but also have implications for the formation of civic attitudes and values, including respect for national identity and formal language competence as part of the internalization of national values. Previous research has identified that Generation Z’s everyday language use in digital media often leads to the dominance of slang and code-mixing that replace the standard norms of the Indonesian language, which in the long term may weaken the understanding of official language conventions if not balanced by strong linguistic literacy. Therefore, this study emphasizes the need to integrate adaptive language and civic education in the digital era to minimize the negative impacts of language shift on the development of national character and awareness as responsible citizens in digital society.
